Rooflights for NMBS Mechelen

The Central Workshops form a technical facility where train sets and locomotives are modernized and repaired. The site, located behind Mechelen railway  station, consists of four large halls through which trains enter on different tracks. These halls are fully equipped as workshops, including heavy-duty overhead cranes. Each hall spans multiple tracks, with a total of four adjoining halls.

On behalf of Monument Vandekerckhove, we are responsible for the replacement of these rooflights. The project aimed for a sustainable solution that respects the character of the existing building while improving the indoor climate.

• The existing roofing is being replaced and additionally insulated.
• Each hall features a centrally positioned rooflight. These rooflights are being replaced with multiwall polycarbonate panels, mounted in an aluminum profile system with uprights and crossbars. In total, 2,342 m² of rooflights are being replaced.
• The second nave is a taller hall. In the two vertical façades of this nave, the cladding is also being renewed with multiwall polycarbonate panels, providing additional natural light and a modern, sustainable finish.
