Description

On behalf of In Advance, we are contributing to an ambitious renovation project for Building L at the Solbosch Campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Here, we are responsible for the complete management, coordination, and execution of an impressive 3,230 m² glass canopy, integrated with BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) technology.

What is BIPV?

BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) refers to solar panels that are not mounted onto a building but are integrated directly into its structure.

In this project, semi-transparent solar cells are embedded directly into the glass, allowing the canopy to provide shelter, admit natural daylight, and generate renewable energy at the same time.

Technical execution

The canopy consists of a series of glazed gable roofs with a slight pitch of 3°. Between these roof sections, specially shaped steel gutters collect and drain rainwater while also providing space for the cabling of the integrated solar cells.

Each roof section is formed by a single continuous glass pane running from ridge to gutter and is securely clamped within specially designed glazing roof profiles.

The gutters are arranged in a 5 × 15 metre grid and are supported by an underlying steel structure of beams and columns following the same layout.

From design to delivery

For this project, we are responsible for the overall project management and technical development of the glass canopy.

From the design phase through to execution, we oversee quality, planning, and coordination among all stakeholders involved. Drawing on our expertise, we ensure that this complex canopy structure is delivered in accordance with the highest quality standards and industry best practices.

Sustainability is important

This project forms part of an ambitious energy renovation of a historic heritage building. The objective is to achieve a primary energy reduction of at least 30% while creating a benchmark project in sustainable construction.

In a later phase, a landscaped garden will be added, bringing together renewable energy generation, architecture, and quality of life in a unique and harmonious way.

Challenges and collaboration

A key challenge of this project is coordinating the design and construction phases while parts of the building remain operational throughout the renovation works.

Through carefully planned phasing, meticulous scheduling, and close collaboration with all project partners, we ensure that campus activities can continue with minimal disruption during the works.

Through this project, we are contributing to the sustainable future of the ULB campus, helping to transform a historic building into a modern, energy-efficient educational environment for generations to come.
