Skylight & roof light
Skylight & roof light
The Jubelpark (Cinquantenaire Park) was commissioned by Leopold II and was intended to commemorate Belgium's 50th anniversary. However, the project was completed 25 years later than originally planned, in 1905, just three years before the monarch's death.
After more than 100 years, all of the glass roofs were in need of replacement. The old zinc roofs with skylights were renovated to meet current energy performance, wind, and water-tightness requirements. The original slope and glass surfaces were respected, as were the glass divisions with typical small profiles. The alignment with the standing seam of the zinc roofs continued in the skylights above them. The transition between zinc and glass roof was refined specifically for this project and made exclusively with materials like zinc and lead. Single glass was replaced with double glass.

The renovation was carried out in four phases: Phases 1 & 2: Museum of Art & History - roof area of 4,000 m² Most of the roofs are covered with zinc, interrupted in various places by large glass sections. The roofs facing the cloister garden are covered with slates; the domes of the library and the rotunda have lead cladding, and the smaller, lower roofs are covered with EPDM.
Phase 3: Autoworld - roof area of 1,250 m² Both the external glass roof and the glass inner ceiling were restored here. The external glass roof was insulated and made wind and waterproof. The old glass of the inner ceiling was replaced with new double glass and installed in the existing profiles.
Phase 4: Military Museum - roof area of 3,000 m². The museum remained open to the public during the renovation. |
Forzon, on behalf of the main contractor Six from Izegem, is responsible for the renewal of the skylights and domes. We handle the supply and installation of the purlins, the aluminum glass, and the seals.
In total, 71 roof lights have been installed, of which only 2 types have been used more than once. This makes the project entirely custom-made.
We have also installed maintenance ladders on the largest roof lights.
One of the biggest challenges was constructing while the museums remained open, ensuring that the museums stayed dry and that no materials could fall.
To eliminate all risks, a floor was placed on the existing membrane at Autoworld. For the Army Museum, a rail system with a movable assembly cart was used for the complete installation. This required a significant amount of climbing and crawling for our technicians.
