City hall Roeselare - ongoing project

Realisation info

Description

The city of Roeselare is investing in a new sustainable town hall as meeting place for the inhabitants.

The new building will be integrated into the existing town hall and belfry.  Both buildings will be preserved and completely renovated.  They are Unesco heritage and will therefore also be completely upgraded.  The newly built administrative centre will be located behind these classic buildings.

A glass covered street with plenty of daylight will be created between the old and new parts.  Open counters will be installed in in this space. The architecture will create openness and lightness and highlight the listed buildings from all sides.

To create the covered street, horizontal steel beams are placed between the buildings.  Glass gabled roofs are created between these beams, from gutter to gutter.  The integration of new structures into existing buildings and their reinforcement is an engineering challenge.  At the ends of the atrium, 2 facades will be placed to close the access to the covered street.
